Dear Parents,

The children are settling in and are working hard in all areas of the curriculum.  I am pleased with what they have accomplished so far.  In the area of writing we have focused mainly on memoir writing and poetry.  As a culminating project, we are having a poetry celebration on October 24th at 9:00 in the morning.  The children have chosen a poem and will be reciting it that day.  They need to memorize it and put feelings into their presentation.  We will practice at school but you also need to listen to your child in order for he/she to memorize the poem.  They will also be reading a poem they have written in school.  I look forward to seeing all of you at our celebration.

In the area of reading, the children have been working on learning key strategies that can be used when they are reading on their own and in class.  These metacognitive approaches will give children the necessary skills to become strong, independent critical thinkers.  For example, I have begun by introducing main idea, details, and text to self connections.  Through explicit teaching, modeling and practice, I am confident that their understanding of what they have read will improve.

The students have completed the first two units in the math curriculum.  They did very well on their unit two test.  I will tell you that everyone scored at the level eighty percent or better. I am very proud of the fine job they have done!

During social studies, the class has been learning about map skills.  They are able to tell what a compass rose is and why it is on a map. I have also introduced them to map keys and how to read them.  I have integrated the Connecticut unit into this part of the social studies curriculum by using a desktop map of the state for the children to work off of.  This week, we will be going into the computer lab to begin making a map from their house to the school.  We have also begun our Connecticut history unit.  The class will be given one quiz a week that they will need to study for at home using their two column notes. Look for the notes to be coming home on Tuesday.  Thank you for your support.

I am in need of boxes of tissues.  I would appreciate any donations.  Thank you for your support.  Again, if you ever have any concerns or questions about anything, please call me at HOME at 860-663-1432.  Thank you.tissues

                                                                                    Warmly,

                                                                                    Cathy
