Library Media Center News

Information and Technology
Literacy Curriculum
The Information and Technology Literacy Curriculum has been successfully implemented. Its purpose is to allow for the integration of information technology skills into the classroom curriculum. I’ve been meeting with the classroom teachers to discuss the new curriculum and to plan lessons. The lessons we design are then team taught. The library is used to do research using books and the computer lab is used to do Internet research. The computer lab is also used to produce final projects using software such as Microsoft Word, KidPix, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft PowerPoint. The foundation of this curriculum is "Flexible Scheduling" where teachers schedule with the Media Specialist any amount of daily or weekly time to complete an information problem-solving assignment. The Media Specialist and the teacher both plan and team teach the lesson, creating a strong link between the questions asked in the classroom and the answers that can be found and communicated in the Media Center.
The Year is Off to a Great Start in the Media Center!
I’m happy to announce Becky Otwell our library paraprofessional is full time at Ryerson this year. Becky has worked in the district for the past twelve years, so some of you may already know her. She will be checking out and shelving books, helping students make their selections, assist students with their research and perform other library duties.
I will be providing more services and continuing to integrate the media center lessons with the classroom curriculum.
Introduction to the Library Media Center
I begin each school year by giving every class an Introduction to the Library Media Center. We discuss library etiquette, how to find and checkout books and the correct use of the library browser. I collect the summer reading list and we discuss some of the books we read over the summer. With 3rd and 4th graders I discuss the Nutmeg Award nominees. “The Nutmeg Book Award encourages children in grades 4-8 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles.” For more information on the Nutmeg award please visit the Nutmeg Award website at http://www.nutmegaward.org/.
Introduction to the Ryerson Computer Lab
I’ll be taking all classes to the computer lab for an introduction. We review computer lab rules and the parts of the computer. We practice opening and closing programs properly. Students do some typing in Microsoft Word and I show them how to save their work into their student folders. Students also refresh and practice their typing skills using Type to Learn Jr.
Over the next few weeks, I will take the 3rd and 4th grade classes to the lab for a library browser lesson. 4th graders will complete an Internet scavenger hunt to introduce the Nutmeg Awards. Our students love working in the lab!
Madison Public Schools 2008 Summer Reading List
At the end of the last school year each student was given a 2008 Summer Reading List compiled by the district library media specialist and Scranton Library librarians with input from district teachers, and Language Arts/ English coordinators. The SRL includes a list of suggested titles arranged by grade level and a recording sheet to log books read over the summer. Please encourage your child to return the recording sheet to their classroom teachers or to me during the first weeks of school. Thanks!
Have a great school year everyone!
