RYERSON ART WEBPAGE
Mrs. Smith

Ryerson art students are off to an exciting start.  Students are drawing from observation outside before heading inside for the cooler months.  Some students are drawing large trees.  Students are studying the shape of the trees’ trunk, and observing the trees’ v-shape branching effect.  Other students are drawing Ryerson School from the perspective of the hill with the school’s many intricate roof lines.   Their drawings are amazing!

Students will be studying some of the famous artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe.  This summer I visited O’Keeffe’s house and ranch in New Mexico.  Students will concentrate on her large scale paintings of flowers and other natural objects.

While in New Mexico I also spent time on Pueblo and Navajo Indian Reservations and was especially inspired by the clay coil pottery.  Third and fourth grade students will create clay coil pots, while first and second grade students will form Native American pinch pots.

In October, fourth grade students will be participating in the annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest.  Later in the year, Fourth grade students will also construct wooden colonial houses as part of the forth grade curriculum.

All Ryerson students will study portraiture, weaving, still-life, print making, and sculpture.

And finally, I hope that parents will join us in the spring for the annual Ryerson Open House!
