Welcome to Miss Neumann’s Spanish webpage! I would first like to introduce myself. I joined the faculty at Ryerson Elementary at the beginning of this year with three classes, and have recently assumed Michael Donovan’s position. I teach grades 1 through 4 and also teach grades 5 and 6 at Brown Middle School. I am a graduate of Central Connecticut State University and hold a BS in Spanish and am certified to teach grades K-12. While I was working on my Bachelor’s degree, I spent a semester studying in Leon, Spain. Currently, I am pursuing a Master’s Degree in Spanish. I enjoy teaching Spanish very much and am very excited to be working with your child for the remainder of this year!

Spanish Teaching Methods

The methods that Madison language teachers, including myself, use are TPR (total physical response) and storytelling. TPR is a method that was created by James Asher, a famous linguist and psychology professor. Students are taught to associate words with body movement and visuals. Students are immersed in the language and acquire language, rather than learn it, similar to the manner in which babies and young children acquire their first language. For example, a baby or young child learning English is not taught to memorize the rules of grammar, but rather to learn words through their environment and use them in a way that is meaningful. Over time, the child is able to use the language in a more complex way and grammar improves. In my classes students are taught mainly through the use of actions, visuals, and music. In every unit, we create picture dictionaries to help learn new words! To help your child practice Spanish, have them teach you the words they have learned or visit the links below to learn new Spanish words!
