I am a special education teacher working with 3rd and 4th grade students at Ryerson School. I work in collaboration with classroom teachers to support the unique needs of students. You may find me working with small groups, with individual students or co-teaching with the classroom teacher. One of my roles is to provide students with strategies for organization and work completion.
With sports and all of the activities after school, our schedules can become hectic. Parents should take an active role in helping to schedule and monitor their child’s homework completion. The following suggestions may help in teaching your child how to function at home when doing their schoolwork.
- provide a comfortable workspace
- have a daily routine for school work and stick to it
- as your child completes an assignment, have them put it directly into their backpack, this minimizes the morning “rush” and eliminates the possibility of something being left behind
- if your child is involved with a sport, check with the teacher about long term assignments
- help your child to plan for long term assignments
- ask questions and discuss you child’s homework with them
- check their assignment pad and homework for correct assignment work, completion, thoroughness, and neatness
- children should read every night and practice math facts (addition, subtraction, and multiplication)
