Welcome to the Ryerson
Third Grade Website

Our year is off to a great start!  The children have been doing many exciting things. We’d love to share with you a little bit of what we’ve been up to during the first couple of months of school.

We’re excited about our new science units; Water, Physical Properties, and Plant and Animal Adaptations.  Our inquiry based science program provides students hands on experiences which make abstract concepts more concrete. Students will rotate as a class to another third grade classroom to study each of the science topics.  Be sure to ask your child what science unit they are studying.

In the area of writing our students have been learning how to write poetry.  We began with an acrostic poem.  Be sure to peek at our bulletin board display in the pod to enjoy your child’s poem.  Poetry allows the student to view their world with a different pair if eyes.  The teaching of similes and other figurative speech will continue throughout this unit of study.

Next month, you can look forward to reading our newsletter which will focus in on math and reading.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Williams

Grade 3 Curriculum Overview

CURRICULUM

Following you will find an overview of the third grade curriculum. Please understand that this is just an overview, one that hits the highlights. Each teacher customizes their approach to fit the needs of their individual classes and tailors instruction to their own teaching style and the learning style of the children. Also, it should be known that we do not teach the same units/concepts at the same time, but we will all cover the same material by the end of the year.

MATHEMATICS

In third grade we continue the “Growing with Mathematics” program.  It is the foundation of our math instruction. It uses manipulatives and has a strong focus on problem-solving. It links basic math skills & concepts to everyday life experiences. In third grade the focus of the program is on the following concepts: number sensibility, multiplication, geometry with two and three dimensional figures, 2- and 3-digit addition/subtraction with and without regrouping, graphing, fractions, probability, place value, time, measurement, and money.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The social studies in third grade are focused on navigating the immediate world around the students and then gaining an understanding of the global community.  We will study map skills, the Bill of Rights, Connecticut, and finally foreign countries.

SCIENCE

The science program is an inquiry based program. It utilizes experimentation and hands on activities to activate the students understanding of the scientific concepts.  The concepts include: water, plant and animal adaptation, and physical properties.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Writing is a key component of our reading language arts curriculum. The significance of writing increases as a student progresses from grade to grade. As part of Madison's language arts portfolio assessment, our grade three and grade four students are evaluated in writing through several products. Reader's response journals document the reader's comprehension through written expression. Both the content and quality of the response is evaluated. The Connecticut Mastery Test requires students to competently respond to a given prompt (topic) in a forty-five minute period of time. Students are then assessed on the effectiveness of their responses. Student writing samples (prompts) are formally assessed three times a year to document an individual student's proficiency with this format. Prompt writing practice and informal assessment occurs on an on-going basis within the classroom. On-going writing development is also assessed through daily writing in Writer's Workshop. Student selected topics or writer's craft lessons drive the product produced in Writer's Workshop.
